Private Banker, CBvE, Geneva.
What inspired you to become a Private Banker?
I joined Coutts 11 years ago in Zurich after completing my Bacalaureat. This was part of a programme sponsored by the Swiss Banking School, which allowed me to spend time in a number of departments including Security Settlement, Credit and Private Banking. During my time in Private Banking, I realised it was where I wanted to spend my career. I really enjoyed the fact that you needed to have a broad knowledge of each of the different areas within the bank and that things never become routine. Being with different people all the time helps keep it interesting.
When I finished the Swiss Banking School, I spent 3 years being a Private Banker Assistant. When my boss left, I was passed a number of clients because I had already built strong relationships with these clients, and since then, I have been building up my portfolio of clients, which has now reached about 150 clients.
What does a normal day involve for you?
Well, how do you define normal?! Most days start around 8am when I sort through all the pending transactions from previous day – this helps me pull together a plan of the work that I need to do for the day. The rest of the day is spent trying to find time to do these things.
If I were to define my role in one phrase, I would describe myself as a ‘problem solver’. Regardless of the type of query that my clients have, I am responsible for identifying the best solutions for them. The majority of my clients are in London, so I travel to London about once a month for a few days of intensive meetings. I also have a number of clients who drop into the office in Geneva if they are passing – this increases in frequency during the winter when people drop in on their way to the ski slopes.
What do you like most about working for Coutts?
I love the fact that I am exposed daily to people who for different reasons have success stories from round the world. Although the majority of my clients are in London, I also have clients in Turkey, Paris, Monaco and the Middle East, so I am continuously exposed to a range of different cultures. Embracing these cultural differences provides inspiration and stimulation in my work, and has allowed me to learn multiple languages. I also really enjoy the international atmosphere within Coutts – for example, in my office alone there are never less than 3 languages being spoken at any time.
