Before you apply
It is important that you understand that flexibility and willingness to relocate is essential to be considered for a place on one of our programmes. You must also have the eligibility to live and work in the UK. If you are unsure of your eligibility, please visit the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website.
We pride ourselves on the integrity of our employees. It will be a condition of making you an offer that, with your permission, we consult a credit reference agency regarding your credit record.
To facilitate fast communication, please ensure you provide us with your correct email address, and regularly check your emails so that you are able to keep progress of your application.
Step 1 - Our application process
Part 1 - Registration
The first part of our application process is a registration page where you are asked to complete some basic personal details and register your username and password. This will take you around 5 minutes to complete. Once you've registered online, here's what you can expect:
Part 2 - Personal details and minimum criteria
If you have done your research and are fully prepared with your personal details ready, this should take you around 15 minutes to complete. We will check that you meet our minimum criteria and also ask you some questions on how you heard about us.
Part 3 - Evidence of your achievements
If you have met our minimum criteria, you will be asked to complete the final section of the application form. This part of the form will capture details regarding your education (both school and university), work experience, language skills and professional/financial qualifications. This should take you around 20 minutes to complete.
Please note - if you have studied abroad and have international qualifications, we are able to assess their equivalency to UK qualifications. Please do not attempt to convert the grades yourself, but complete the form giving as much detail about your national qualifications as possible. If necessary, we will contact you for more information.
Step 2 - Competency Questionnaire and Numerical Reasoning Test
If your application meets our initial requirements, we will ask you to complete an online Competency Questionnaire which will give us an indication of your working style. There are 16 sets of questions to answer and it will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
If your working style matches the requirements of the business area you are applying to, you will then be asked to complete an online Numerical Reasoning Test. This test measures your reasoning skills, not your mathematical knowledge. You will have the opportunity to complete some examples before you start. However, please be aware that the test automatically times out after 21 minutes. Make sure each answer you give corresponds to the appropriate question. Please note that, if you are invited to attend an assessment centre, you will be required to complete a similar paper-based numerical reasoning test.
You can sit each exercise at a time that suits you. To help us process your application quickly, we recommend you complete the tests within 72 hours of them being sent to you.
Step 3 - Telephone Interview
If you are successful at Step Two, we'll invite you to take part in a telephone interview to assess how closely you meet the key job criteria.
Step 4 - Assessment Centre
If you are successful at Step 3, you'll be invited to a Graduate Assessment Centre. These are held in London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Belfast and Leeds. There may well be a pre-assessment dinner the night before your Assessment Centre. Please note that this activity is not assessed. It is purely a way for managers to meet and greet you before your centre. It is also an opportunity for you to meet our managers and ask questions about the business. The assessment consists of a range of exercises and assessments, which provide us with a comprehensive picture of your working skills and behaviours. We will contact you via email to inform you of dates when our Assessment Centres will run and if necessary we will provide overnight accommodation.
If you are successful, we will make an offer to you in writing. Upon your written acceptance of our offer, we will send you a joining pack to help prepare for your career with the Royal Bank of Scotland. If your application is not successful, we will advise you in writing. Full feedback is available upon your request.
Keeping track of your application
You will receive an acknowledgement email from us on receipt of your application - usually within 48 hours - and we will continue to process your application unless you are informed otherwise. You are able to track the progress of your application at any time by logging back into the system.
Some applications will be processed relatively quickly, dependent on business needs, but we will ensure that we keep you informed of your progress at all times.
