Senior Legal Council. CBvE. Zurich

What activities does your job involve?
There are seven people in the Group legal service team in Zurich which is split into specific roles and departments. We have the overall responsibility for legal matters and the delivery of legal services to CBvE Zurich, its branches and subsidiaries in Switzerland and, to the extent Swiss laws, regulations and legal policies are concerned, to its subsidiaries and branches abroad.
Private Banking is a broad area, and we are involved in a wide range of activities such as providing legal support and advice to all departments, handling client claims, communication with local supervisory and other authorities, litigations, clients’ inheritance cases, etc. We also visit our branches and subsidiaries both in Switzerland and abroad on a regular basis.
What is a typical day like in your office?
There is no such thing as a typical day! I often go to work with expectations of what my day will involve, and by the evening, I have handled completely different cases. For example, a couple of weeks ago the bank received an unexpected visit of the Swiss Federal Police as part of an investigation the Federal Prosecutor in Lausanne was conducting. As a result, I spent all day assisting them with their investigation and providing the information & documentation material they requested.
As well as dealing with ad hoc queries, I also work on different projects, which means I am regularly attending meetings and tele conferences with my colleagues within CBvE as well as within RBS Group in London and Edinburgh.
What do you like most about working for Coutts?
The best thing about working here is the team atmosphere – everyone works really hard, but people are good at supporting and helping each other. I have a very supportive boss and enjoy the fact that I have contact with lots of different departments throughout CBvE and RBS. Having worked at Coutts for over 5 years, I have built up good relationships with the Private Bankers and all other staff members.
I like the fact that everyday in my job is a new challenge. Working with colleagues in different countries that have different levels of regulation means I am continuously facing new challenges. I am working on a number of different projects in different countries which means I have to keep up to date with changing legislation.
